What type of funding do we offer?

We have three categories of funding available: Personal Grants, Corporate Grants and

Scholarships. Personal grants are once-off grants that range between £500 to £3,000.

Organisations seeking funding towards specific projects that align with our funding

objectives may apply for a once-off Corporate Grant, with the value of the grant being at the

Trustee’s discretion. If you have been successful in receiving a personal/corporate grant you can also apply for further funding in subsequent years. We also award a select few Scholarships to exemplary students in full or part-time study and the Foundation can award up to £10,000 annually.

We take pride in the diverse range of projects and scholars we have supported in the past, details of which can be found on our website. We encourage all potential applicants to apply and make a significant impact in their chosen field of study or project.

Funding criteria to be aware of

Applicants must study at a UK based institution (including distance learning). Although we

welcome applications from across the UK, the Trustees have a preference for applicants who

live or study in the geographical regions of Bristol, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire

and Somerset. We are unable to fund applicants who study outside of the UK but will

support overseas visits if they are integral to the course or necessary for research.

How was the St Matthias Foundation formed?

The Foundation of St Matthias is a trust, formed following the closure and sale of the College of St Matthias in 1979. The College was a Church of England College of Education but following a decline in the birth-rate and a reduction in the number of teachers required for training, the then Secretary of State for Education and Science requested that the college be closed. The assets were sold and the income invested to form a trust fund.
